Student AI Guidelines *
Welcome to our class! As technology and artificial intelligence (AI) become increasingly integrated into our learning and work experiences, it's vital to establish some guidelines for the ethical and productive use of AI tools. Below you will find instructions on how to use AI in OUR class, as well as some best practices to ensure a respectful and inclusive environment for everyone. Be aware different teachers may have different AI use guidelines, so check with your other teachers before using AI tools for class assignments / work!
1. AI Use Guidelines
Legal Access: Before using any AI websites, apps, tools, or services, ensure that you have legal access to them. This includes meeting any age requirements.
Authorization: AI tools can be a valuable resource in our class. Unless specified otherwise in an assignment, quiz, test, or class activity in CANVAS, you are allowed to utilize AI tools.
Documentation and Attribution: It's crucial to give proper credit to any AI tool you use.
Link the AI Tool: Always provide a link to the AI tool(s) you used in your assignment.
Explain Your Use: Briefly explain how you used the AI tool to reach your answers or create your content.
Sharing Is Caring: Found an intriguing or particularly useful AI tool? Share it with your classmates and teacher. Learning is a collaborative process, and everyone benefits from diverse insights and resources.
2. Image Guidelines
Respect & Kindness: Always ensure that the images you create or share show respect and kindness to all.
Pride in Your Work: If you would hesitate to show an image to your parents, reconsider using it in class.
Avoid Controversies: Steer clear of politically disrespectful or controversial images and topics. Let's keep our classroom environment politically neutral and focused on learning.
No Bathroom Humor: Please avoid using or sharing memes or references related to bathrooms or bathroom humor.
3. Suggested AI Tools
There's a vast array of AI tools out there, but here are some recommended ones for our class:
Padlet ("I Can't Draw" feature): We have a shared space for AI-generated images. Remember to sign in before posting.
Khanmigo / Khan Academy AI Tools: These tools are embedded within our Canvas assignments and activities. They can provide additional assistance or insights.
ChatGPT: A powerful AI for generating text or getting answers to various queries. (Must be age 13 to use)
Claude.ai: Another great tool for diverse AI-related tasks, which supports uploading of documents for use / analysis (up to 10 MB in size - Must be age 13 to use)
By adhering to these guidelines, we can make the most of the technology available to us while ensuring a positive and productive classroom environment. If you have any questions or concerns about the use of AI in our class, please feel free to reach out.

* Thanks Eric Curts for suggesting & providing an AI prompt to improve teacher-written classroom AI Guidelines! See his excellent webinar, "Artificial Intelligence / Natural Misuse - Managing AI in Schools." (Great links in the video description, including his presentation slides!) The prompt I copied/used is on his slide 22.
